Club Deportivo Aguila is
making a difference in the small Central American country. Our fathers and grandfathers told us too many
stories of Aguila, Fas and Alianza winning the Concacaf Champions League and
having close games with South American giants such as Santos of Pele or Penarol
from Uruguay.
Professional soccer in
El Salvador has been a big joke for a while. Match fixing scandals, stadiums in
ruins, teams in debt, Metapan and Fas getting embarrassed in the Concacaf
Champions League, the last 10 years of Salvadorian soccer have been a complete
disaster, we lost a game in El Salvador vs Panama for the first time in the
history of our country. CD Aguila also
lost to Esteli at home, a team from Nicaragua, a Nicaraguan team never would even
dreamed of doing that 10 years ago, Nicaragua has always been a baseball
nation.
About 10 years ago we
though we were 5th in Concacaf behind Mexico, USA, Costa Rica and Jamaica but
in the last 10 years, Honduras has claimed that spot, Panama seems to be
heading that way too, so now we are next to Trinidad and Guatemala. El Salvador
is 90th in the FIFA ranking and 9th in Concacaf. FESA has
been the only Little hope our “King” sport had lately. FESA is a youth project
that prepares Young talented footballers, similar to European football
academies.
Going back to Aguila,
they hired the Dely Valdes brothers, this is HUGE for Salvadorian soccer. We have lost a lot of credibility in Central
America, Concacaf teams don’t respect us anymore, we live in the past of Magico
Gonzalez, he is done, he has been done for decades and there will probably
never be another Magico Gonzalez, not in El Salvador, not even in Brazil or
Argentina, yes Magico Gonzalez was that good, he was a phenomenon that only
happens once in centuries. Aguila and
their new administration are doing a great job. Metapan has been dominating
Salvadorian soccer in the last 10 years, a team from a really small town in the
northern part of the country. This Aguila administration is serious about
taking Salvadorian soccer where it belongs, next to Costa Rica, USA and Mexico,
the best in our area. They are hiring the right coaches, bringing good young
players and supporting their youth teams.
They are claiming to be looking at a place to build a new stadium,
bravo! This is what Salvadorian soccer needs, they need true professionals
running the sport, they need young visionary business people, people that care
about the club and the sport.
About Dely Valdes, he
played in the English premier league, he also played in Spain, he was a very
good player for the Panamanian national team and he was also the coach of the
best Panamanian team the region has ever seen, they were minutes away from
taking Mexico out of the last world cup.
Bravo for the Aguila’s
administration team, they are doing things right, they are thinking big,
thinking ahead, thinking and working for the future of our club and Salvadorian
soccer.
Cheers to all the
Salvadorians around the world.
